Hey, Thomas here. You may have noticed we have been quiet since last year. So what gives? Well.. a couple of things.

First, I kicked off 2022 by starting a new job! It’s a great opportunity with a smaller company doing the kind of things I love to do. It was also a pretty big pay bump which has been a big help too. So for most of the past 2 and a half months, I’ve been focused on getting up to speed with the new job.

Second, we’ve also been rethinking our future plans a little. We still want to travel and ultimately become location independent. But lately, the thought of jumping straight from our current life to traveling full-time has seemed overwhelming.

So I did what I do with anything I find overwhelming, I broke it down into smaller pieces. Instead of focusing on a goal so far out it seems unattainable, I zoom in to something more realistic. What if our first step was getting a travel trailer we could use for weekend trips now, and for longer trips later?

The travel trailer we rented for a weekend. Our goal was to try it out.

After talking it over with Erin we agreed that plan seems like a reasonable waypoint that keeps our ultimate goal intact. Last year we rented a trailer and learned we wanted something with a little more space. That rental was already maxing out our Tacoma’s towing capacity, so the first step towards this new goal is to get a new truck.

Last month we built and ordered our ideal Ford F-150 with features we’ll need. But they’re taking about 3-4 months to ship right now so we’re still waiting on that. If used car prices stay high, we should get a good trade-in value on the Tacoma and have a full-size truck that gives us a lot more options when choosing a travel trailer. Once we get the truck we’ll continue our search for a travel trailer, but for now we wait.

So that’s what we’ve been up to and our new plan. We haven’t changed where we’re headed, we’re just changing how we plan to get there. It’s the first time we’ve shifted our plans on this journey, but I have a feeling it won’t be the last. And that’s ok. Through it all we’re going to go with the flow and just be a leaf.
